What is the ruling on praying behind an Imam who uses alcoholic (ethanol) perfumes which he does not consider impure, and this is the belief of most people in his country? And what is the ruling on praying behind an Imam when I do not know whether he has perfumed himself or not? And if it is not permissible, should I pray at home, including Friday prayer?

Ethanol is an intoxicating intoxicant, and scholars have differed regarding the impurity and purity of intoxicants. The majority of scholars hold that it is intrinsically impure, while others have asserted its purity, among them Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, who argued for its purity by stating that there is no evidence from the Qur'an, Sunnah, or the practice of the Companions to indicate its impurity, and that the default status of things is purity. Accordingly, it is permissible to pray behind someone who uses ethanol on their clothing, following the opinion of those who deem it pure, and one should not abandon Friday and congregational prayers on account of it. As for someone whose situation is unknown, the default is the purity of their garment and the validity of their prayer.
