What are the constituents of a happy marital life in light of Islam?

Among the reasons for marital happiness are: that the choice be based on religion and character, along with the importance of consultation (istishara) and seeking guidance from Allah (istikharah) before marriage, and each spouse knowing the rights and duties of the other and being keen to fulfill them, in addition to supplicating to Allah and turning to Him, for all goodness is in His hands.
