What is the position regarding the اختلاف (disagreement/variation) in interpretations of a single verse? And does it mean that whatever contradicts the correct interpretation is wrong? And how can one know the correct interpretation and use it as evidence? And is it permissible to reject an argument built upon one of these interpretations because there is another interpretation for it? And what is the governing principle in that regard?
The respected exegetes (mufassirun) have not differed on theinterpretation of definitive (qat'iyyat) texts. Most of their differences are those of diversity and ijtihad (independent reasoning), not contradiction, like their differing on the interpretation of "the Straight Path." Sometimes, there is a difference of contradiction in what the text can accommodate, such as their differing on the interpretation of "three quro'" between purity and menstruation. Both interpretations are acceptable if the Arabic language and the rules of accepted exegesis allow for them. There is no blame on whoever adopts one of these opinions. Any interpretation that contradicts the rules must be rejected. Whoever is correct receives two rewards, and whoever errs receives the reward for ijtihad.
