Why have scholars differed in interpreting the Holy Qur’an, while Christians claim that their Gospel has one version and one interpretation?
The scholars did not differ in interpreting the entire Qur’an. Most of the verses did not involve any disagreement in their interpretation, and this is sufficient for the Qur’an's guidance. Furthermore, most of the existing disagreements occurred after the preferred centuries and were minimal among the Companions and the Successors.
As for the few verses concerning which disagreement occurred, they fall into two categories: 1. Diversity of interpretation (Khilaf Tanawwu'): This is a verbal disagreement that is not impactful, where each interpreter expresses the meaning with a different phrase that indicates a part of the intended meaning, or mentions some of its types by way of example. This is not a contradictory difference. 2. Contradictory and divergent disagreement (Khilaf Tadadd wa Tabayyun): This is very rare and did not occur in verses related to creed (Aqeedah) or the objectives of legislation (Maqasid al-Shari'ah), but rather in verses concerning rulings (Ahkam) or some narrative and admonitory contexts. This disagreement, despite its scarcity, should not be a cause for impugning the Qur’an.
As for the claim of denying disagreement in the Gospel or its interpretations, it is an astonishing claim that contradicts reality. The versions of the Gospel, its narrations, and its translations show significant contradictions, and the disagreements among Christians in its interpretation led to their divergence in the very foundation of religion and creed. Unlike Islam, there is no disagreement among the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah regarding the pillars and main realities of the religion.
