What is the evidence for the obligation of gentleness in advice, enjoining good, and forbidding evil? And when is severity permissible? And is the advisor rewarded if the advised person does good out of courtesy rather than conviction, or must he be convinced to do it for the sake of Allah? And is it valid to call to goodness, memorize the Quran, and seek knowledge without convincing one of sincerity to Allah?

The fundamental principle of inviting to the way of Allah is enjoining good and forbidding evil with wisdom, good counsel, and disputing in the best manner. Gentleness is the basis of the call, except in exceptional circumstances that necessitate severity, such as dealing with warring disbelievers or those who have wronged in argumentation. As for the one who enjoins good, he is reminded of the virtue of seeking Allah's reward, sincerity, and purifying one's intention.
