The husband's statement to his wife: "You are divorced, divorced, divorced" is an explicit pronouncement by which a single divorce occurs, even if the husband did not intend it, unless he intended thereby to effect three divorces. The husband's intention to avert harm and prevent the destruction of the marital home does not preclude the occurrence of divorce, and this is not considered a legitimate coercion that prevents divorce. The husband's permissible lying to his wife, which is sanctioned by Islamic law, does not prevent the occurrence of the divorce that he conditioned, and conditioning divorce upon an already existing matter causes the divorce to occur immediately.
