It is not permissible for a wife to leave without her husband's permission, and she must obey him in returning to his house. If she refuses without a legitimate Shari excuse, then she is disobedient (nashiz), and her right to maintenance (nafaqah) is forfeited. Similarly, it is not permissible for her to refuse intimacy with him except for an excuse. It is advised to attempt reconciliation and overlook minor faults, for if he dislikes one characteristic in her, he may be pleased with another. The treatment for disobedience (nushuz) involves admonition, desertion in bed, and striking if the preceding methods are ineffective. Moreover, what cannot be achieved through severity may be attained through gentleness and kindness.
