Is it permissible to propose to a girl with the father's approval but the mother's refusal?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible for a mother to prevent her son from marrying, especially if he fears falling into haram (unlawful acts), is financially capable, and able to bear the expenses of marriage. This is because it prevents him from obeying the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) for young people to marry. Although obedience to the mother is obligatory, there is no obedience to a creature if it involves disobedience to the Creator. Therefore, try to convince her, and if she does not respond, seek help from those who hold influence with her. If she still does not respond, then marry the girl of good character and religious commitment. This will not be considered disobedience because her reasons are unconvincing; rather, they are an argument in his favor, especially since lust affects young people more intensely than others. Nevertheless, you must treat your mother with righteousness, kindness, and obedience, and strive to appease her by all means.
