How will people be resurrected on the Day of Judgment, and will they be resurrected in the state in which they died?

There has been a difference of opinion regarding the explanation of the hadith "Every servant shall be resurrected upon the state in which he died." Some interpreted it to mean that he will be resurrected in the shrouds he was enshrouded in, while others limited it to the martyr or the one in a state of ihram, and still others generalized it to every human being.

The more preponderant view is that the meaning is that a person will be resurrected upon the state in which he died, whether good or evil. For deeds in this world have consequences in the Hereafter, and the recompense of every person will be according to his deeds. This is affirmed by other hadiths which clarify that whoever dies patient and seeking Allah's reward will be resurrected in that state, and whoever dies showing off will be resurrected in that state. Likewise, whoever dies drunk will be resurrected drunk.

So, the intent is the person's state and deeds at the time of his death, not the shrouds. Therefore, if a dancer dies while dancing, she could be resurrected in that state, and Allah knows best.
