What is the ruling on female students using razors (knives) to engrave the names of their friends on their hands?

This phenomenon indicates intellectual and spiritual emptiness. The serious Muslim girl's primary concern is to please Allah. If the effect of the name is permanent, then it is forbidden because it alters Allah's creation, and it falls under the ruling of forbidden tattooing, according to the agreed-upon Hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. If its effect is temporary, then its prohibition is not unlikely, as it involves harming the skin without a legitimate Sharia benefit. Its prohibition intensifies if it is associated with imitating disbelievers or immoral women, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Likewise, if it leads to the heart becoming preoccupied with the person whose name is inscribed, and there is a fear of falling into عشق (passionate love), then it is forbidden as a preventative measure (sadd al-dhari'a). Students should be advised and guided.
