What is the Islamic ruling regarding a husband's playful statement to his wife, "You are divorced," accompanied by laughter, and then his subsequent utterance to her, during a real dispute and intense anger, "You are divorced," knowing that they reconciled and resumed their normal lives without renewing the marriage contract or involving a sheikh, and that the wife was pregnant?

Marriage is a solemn covenant, and the words of divorce should not be trifled with.

When a husband says to his wife, "You are divorced," whether in jest or in anger, divorce takes effect if he is aware of what he is saying.

If it is not the third divorce, the husband has the right to take her back as long as the wife is within her waiting period ('iddah). A new contract is not required unless the waiting period has ended.

The return can be by word or action, and it is recommended to have witnesses to it.
