The question

What should I do, as I made a vow to speak to my friend every day—due to my preference for distancing myself from her because of frequent disagreements—and I only speak to her because of this vow?

The answer

The aforementioned vow is one of permissible matters, and the person who made the vow has the choice between fulfilling it or abandoning it. It is not considered binding by the majority of scholars, though some scholars believe it is binding. To resolve the difference of opinion, it is preferable for whoever does not fulfill it to offer an expiation for breaking an oath, which is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If one cannot find any of these, then fasting for three days, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The expiation for a vow is the expiation for an oath."
