Children must be dutiful to their mother, bring joy to her, and completely provide for her. Spending on her is obligatory, especially if she possesses wealth that does not cover her needs. A Muslim should not neglect this obligatory extent. The righteous predecessors were the most dutiful of people to their mothers. Examples include Harithah ibn al-Nu'man, who was the most dutiful of people to his mother; Kahmas ibn al-Hasan, who feared scorpions for his mother and bought her fruit; Muhammad ibn Sirin, who spoke to his mother with utmost humility; Zayn al-Abidin, who would not eat with his mother for fear that his hand might reach something her eyes desired before hers; Abdullah ibn Awf, who freed two slaves for raising his voice above his mother's; and Talq ibn Habib, who used to kiss his mother's head and would not walk on the roof of a house if she was beneath it.
