Is a woman sinful for aborting a fetus that is thirty-six days old due to marital problems, and what must she do to atone for her sin after repenting?

Abortion is forbidden at any stage of the fetus, according to the preponderant opinion. If a woman proceeds with an abortion before forty days, relying on a fatwa permitting it from a reputable scholar or due to ignorance of the ruling, then there is no sin upon her. However, if there is a guarantee, such as abortion after the ensoulment, then the blood money (diyah) is obligatory upon her. As for abortion merely out of personal whim, she is sinful, and sincere repentance is obligatory upon her, and there is no specific expiation due from her. Caution must be exercised in marital problems, and divorce should be avoided as a means to solve them. A woman is not permitted to seek divorce except with a legitimate Shar'i reason.
