Money taken unjustly from a person must be returned to him without informing him.

As for money earned from selling tobacco and gambling before you knew of their prohibition, the most cautious approach is to dispose of it by spending it on charitable causes and public welfare. Some scholars, however, have held that there is no obligation to dispose of it, citing the Almighty's saying: {So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists, he may have what has passed, and his affair is committed to Allah}.
