What is the ruling on the Farewell Circumambulation (Tawaf al-Wada') in the Shafi'i madhab? Are there two narrations concerning it, one stating that it is obligatory (fard) and the other that it is a Sunnah? And what does that indicate?
Imam Al-Shafi'i held differing opinions regarding the ruling on the farewell circumambulation ( Al-Wada'): In his old قول قديم (qawl qadim) opinion, he stipulated its obligation, which is also the view of Abu Hanifa and Ahmad. In Al-Imla', he stated that it is a , which is the view of Malik. The practical implication of this difference appears in the obligation of a compensatory sacrifice (dam) for one who omits it; those who deemed it obligatory mandated the sacrifice, while those who considered it recommended did not. Al-Nawawi and Al-Rafi'i have clarified the various opinions, and the soundest among the Shafi'is is that the farewell circumambulation is obligatory, and omitting it necessitates a compensatory sacrifice, and this is the choice of Al-Rafi'i and Al-Nawawi.
