What is the expiation for an oath of divorce, and is it permissible to offer it after a long time?

The wording of the oath of divorce was not mentioned. The default position, according to the majority of scholars, is that divorce takes effect if the one who swore by it breaks their oath, and no expiation is required for it. However, Ibn Taymiyyah held the view that if the one who swore by divorce did not intend for the divorce to occur, but rather intended to encourage or prevent something, then it is considered an oath for which an expiation of an oath is required if it is broken. The one who swore such an oath is advised to refer to the Sharia courts.
