The act of someone increasing the price of a commodity without intending to buy it is forbidden (), because it involves deception and defrauding the buyer. This is the forbidden najsh (bid-rigging or artificial bidding), and the Prophet's prohibition of it is a prohibition of حرمة (harāmah - unlawfulness/sanctity). If najsh is proven and there is an uncustomary overcharge, the buyer has the option to either annul the sale or uphold it.
