What is the ruling on using incense, frankincense, "fasookh," and other things that are said to attract jinn?

We do not know of an incense called "Al-Fasookh." As for Javanese frankincense (incense from Java), its use is permissible, and the claim that it attracts jinn is incorrect. However, soothsayers use types of incantated incense when summoning jinn, imitating Christians and Sabians. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that incantating incense and taking it as an offering is the religion of Christians and Sabians. The basic principle is the permissibility of using incense, but it is necessary to avoid types of incense that are known to be used by sorcerers and soothsayers, as a pre-emptive measure to block any means to evil.
