What is the interpretation of the Almighty's saying: "And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you, so that you would forge against Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a close friend. And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little"?

The noble verse, "And indeed, they were about to tempt you away," clarifies that the polytheists attempted to divert the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from revelation. It was revealed in response to the attempts of Quraish and Thaqif to compromise with him on some religious rulings or the treatment of his followers. The exegetes have explained that this verse and what followed it, "And had We not made you firm," mean that Allah protected the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made him firm, and prevented him from the slightest inclination towards their demands, confirming the firmness of the religion and the absence of compromise on its fundamental issues. This firmness was by Allah's infallibility and preservation, which indicates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, never intended to agree with them.
