Is the severing of kinship ties (qati'at ar-rahim) through enmity or through not visiting?

Allah has commanded the maintenance of kinship ties and prohibited their severance, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A severer of kinship ties will not enter Paradise." Maintaining kinship ties is not bound by a specific method or time; rather, it is determined by custom. It has varying degrees, the lowest of which is abandoning estrangement. It differs based on ability and need, with some acts being obligatory and others recommended. One who performs some acts of kinship maintenance is not considered a severer, but if one falls short of what they are capable of, they are not considered a maintainer. Hostility towards kin is a severance of ties. However, abstaining from visits is not necessarily a severance. If the abstention is for a legitimate reason, it is not considered the forbidden severance.
