What is the definition of one who severs ties of kinship? Is there an intermediate status between one who maintains ties and one who severs them, which removes the sin of severance without reaching the great virtue of maintaining ties? Do maintaining ties of kinship on occasions and periodically remove the great sin and severe punishment for severing ties, even if I am not recorded among those who maintain ties with Allah?

The severer of kinship ties is one who abandons his relatives and does not maintain any form of connection with them. However, one who maintains some connection, even if not to its fullest extent, is not considered a severer of ties. Maintaining kinship ties can be through words, even if just a greeting, and there are varying degrees of this, some better than others. As for one who only maintains kinship ties on special occasions, it appears that he does not incur sin. However, whether he is recorded by Allah among those who maintain ties is within Allah's knowledge.
