What is meant by "haraj" (urging/warning) snakes in the home and giving them three days, as was reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, these houses have inhabitants [of jinn]. If you see any of them, warn them three times. If it leaves, then good; otherwise, kill it, for it is a disbeliever." (Narrated by Muslim). The intent of this hadith is to warn snakes that appear in houses for three days. If it does not leave after the warning, then it is permissible to kill it, because its persistence indicates that it is not from the Muslim inhabitants of the houses, but rather a devil. The warning can be given by saying: "I adjure you by Allah and the Last Day not to appear to us or harm us," or "I implore you by the covenant that Noah and Solomon took from you not to harm us."
