Is the value of zakat for gold determined by its weight at the beginning of the hawl (zakatable year) or at its end, if its weight increased during the hawl?
If the amount of gold a person owns increases while it is already at the nisab (minimum taxable amount), there are two scenarios:
1. If the new gold came into his possession through a gift or inheritance: The new gold will have its own independent hawl (one-year lunar cycle) calculated from the time it entered his possession. The old gold is paid zakat on when its hawl is due, and then the new gold is paid zakat on when its hawl is due. Alternatively, the zakat for all the gold can be paid when the hawl of the old gold is due, as an early payment of zakat.
2. If the new gold was purchased with cash that was already in his possession: The hawl for this gold will be the same as the hawl of the cash with which it was purchased, regardless of whether it aligns with the hawl of the original gold or not. The hawl of the cash is what matters. Gold, silver, currencies, and trade goods are treated as a single asset in this context.
