In the Arabic language, 'Aqir' (عاقر) and 'Aqeem' (عقيم) both denote the inability to procreate. 'Al-'Aqir' refers to a woman who does not bear children, a description used for the wife of Zachariah (peace be upon him). 'Aqir' is a temporary condition that may disappear, and it can also describe a man. As for 'Al-'Aqeem', it refers to one who does not bear children, whether male or female, as used in the description of the wife of Abraham (peace be upon him). It can also be applied to anything that does not produce, such as an 'aqeem' (barren) wind that does not fertilize clouds, or an 'aqeem' (unfruitful) day in which there is no good.
