Am I rightfully in charge of my mother and sisters, and do they owe me obedience, and am I responsible for them on the Day of Judgment, or should I suffice with advice and guidance? And must I live with them, or can I lead them from my own home?

The wife's maintenance is obligatory upon the husband, and the maintenance of young daughters who have no wealth is obligatory upon their father until they get married. If the father is absent or abandons his duty, and he has wealth, maintenance is taken from his wealth. If he has no wealth, maintenance becomes obligatory upon the mother, and she can claim back what she spent from the father. If the mother has no wealth, then her maintenance and the maintenance of her daughters falls upon their heirs, each according to their share of inheritance. As for the right of Qawamah (care, protection, and rectification), it belongs only to the husband and the father, while the brother is only responsible for advice, guidance, and direction.
