Can ill omens afflict a specific land or place other than a dwelling, based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding ill omens in a dwelling, especially if there have been previous experiences of problems in nearby houses, and is there a relationship between low-lying land (a valley) and jinn?

Scholars have differed regarding the hadiths concerning bad omens (shoum) in a house, a woman, and a horse. Malik and a group of scholars held that these hadiths should be taken at their apparent meaning. In contrast, Al-Khattabi and many others viewed them as an exception to the forbidden practice of seeking omens (tīrah), meaning that if a person dislikes dwelling in a house, or being in the company of a woman or a horse, they are permitted to leave it.

This interpretation is supported by what is narrated in the Sunnah from Anas ibn Malik: "Leave it, it is blameworthy," said to someone whose situation worsened in a house he inhabited. Al-Qurtubi clarifies that this is not from the pre-Islamic practice of seeking omens (ṭīrah), but rather it is a permission for a Muslim to abandon what he dislikes and what troubles his mind, while believing that Allah is the ultimate Doer.

These three (house, woman, horse) were specifically mentioned due to people's frequent ill omens associated with them because of their constant companionship. A house whose occupants suffer harm may be abandoned, unlike a place of plague, from which one is prohibited from leaving.

A distinction is made between three types of matters: those from which no harm results, so they should not be paid attention to; those from which harm occurs and becomes widespread, so one should be warned against them but not flee; and those that are specific and cause harm through prolonged association, such as a house, a horse, and a woman, in which case it is permissible to replace them.

In summary, if the questioner feels anything negative about a place, she is permitted to choose another one. There is no basis linking low-lying lands or valleys with jinn.
