Is it permissible to use expertise gained from working at the tax authority—which is considered unlawful—to earn a living through lawful work, such as customs clearance for legitimate goods?

There is no harm in benefiting from experiences gained from previous unlawful acts and utilizing them in permissible endeavors. The Sharia does not prohibit those who repent, or others, from engaging in permissible activities, benefiting from such experiences.
