Is it necessary to strive for the fulfillment of a supplication such as, "O Provider, provide me with this girl whom I have loved, and enable me to propose to her and marry her as soon as possible," or is waiting sufficient, contrary to what appears from the stories of the righteous?

The answer to a supplication does not necessarily come immediately. The response may be delayed for profound reasons. Indeed, the supplicant may be compensated with something better than what he sought, either in this world or the next. Many righteous individuals experience a delay in their supplications being answered for numerous reasons. In fact, some prayers of the Prophets were not answered. For instance: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked his Lord for intercession for his mother, but it was denied to him. And he, peace and blessings be upon him, asked Allah for three things, and he was granted two but denied one. It is essential to take the necessary means.
