Does a person's request to a deceased person in their grave to supplicate to Allah on their behalf for their prayer to be answered or for them to be granted a righteous wife constitute major Shirk (polytheism), and is there any excuse for major Shirk?

Seeking supplication from the deceased at their grave is forbidden (haram), and it is of two types: major shirk if the fulfillment of a need is sought directly from the deceased, and an innovation (bid'ah) and a means to major shirk if one asks the deceased to supplicate to Allah. The preponderant view is that seeking supplication from the deceased is not major shirk in itself, but rather an innovation. As for one who falls into major shirk out of ignorance and is not negligent in seeking to know the truth, they are excused. However, if their ignorance is due to their negligence or carelessness, then they are not excused. If the perpetrator of shirk acted based on an interpretation, or made a mistake unintentionally, or was compelled to do so, then they are excused. One should be preoccupied with inviting those who have fallen into shirk rather than judging them, while exercising caution in judging individuals.
