Is it permissible to fool around and laugh for recreation at all times, especially when feeling depressed, given that one's mother has forbidden it?
A Muslim is required to be firm and serious, and to seek loftier matters, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah loves the noblest and loftiest of matters and dislikes their trivialities." Permissible jesting is fine, so long as it is not excessive, in which case it becomes disliked, or if it involves something forbidden, such as mockery, in which case it becomes prohibited. Excessive laughter kills the heart. Permissible recreation is allowed, but it should not dominate a person's life. The cause of depression is heedlessness of Allah; therefore, it is recommended to remember Allah and recite the Quran, for the tranquility of hearts is in His remembrance. It is also recommended to be keen on what pleases your mother and avoid what displeases her, for in her رضا (pleasure) is the pleasure of Allah.
