What is the ruling on pawning gold at the bank to buy household necessities?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible to deal with a bank and mortgage gold with it if it does not deal with usury, in order to secure the right of the creditor with his debt, as Allah the Almighty says: "And if you are on a journey and find no scribe, then let there be pledges taken into possession." And the Prophet (peace be upon him) mortgaged his shield with a Jew. However, if the bank deals with usury, it is not permissible to deal with it, for Allah has threatened those who consume usury with war, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) cursed the consumer of usury, its payer, its scribe, and its two witnesses.
