Is adopting your view on the aforementioned matter the correct approach, despite the ensuing difficulties, or is adopting the view of those who issued a fatwa permitting it the correct approach? And would the money be unlawful in this case?

If the permissibility of a fatwa becomes clear, it is permissible to act upon it. Otherwise, merely adopting the easiest opinions without clear evidence of their superiority, and without necessity or hardship, is considered blameworthy pursuit of concessions (tattabu' al-rukhas al-madhmoum). A Muslim should follow what appears to him to be correct and avoid doubtful matters to preserve his religion and honor.
