Is a triple divorce counted if it occurred in a state of anger, and are there three types of anger?
Scholars have differed regarding the triple divorce, and the most preponderant opinion is that it counts as a single divorce, whether uttered in one phrase or in separate phrases. They cite as evidence what Muslim narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them. A divorce issued in anger has three scenarios:
1. Slight anger: The divorce is valid and takes effect.
2. Severe anger that removes consciousness: The divorce does not take effect.
3. Severe anger that affects one's will but does not remove consciousness: The most preponderant opinion is that it does not take effect, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There is no divorce and no emancipation in a state of 'ighlaq' (compulsion or extreme anger)."
Based on this, if the divorce was issued in a state of severe anger, it does not take effect. If his anger was slight, a single divorce takes effect.
