Are minor sins forgiven if a major sin is committed and then repented of?

If a Muslim repents from major sins, Allah forgives them, and these sins do not then prevent the expiation of minor sins. However, if one does not repent from major sins, scholars have differed regarding the expiation of minor sins in that case, due to the interpretation of Allah’s saying: "If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins." The majority of scholars hold that avoiding major sins is a condition for the expiation of minor sins through acts of worship. Whereas others opined that major sins are not effaced by acts of worship, while minor sins are. An-Nawawi mentioned that all sins are forgiven except for major sins, emphasizing that the hadith does not mean that no sin is forgiven if a major sin exists.
