Does committing minor sins, without persisting in them, prevent them from becoming major sins?

Every son of Adam errs, and the best of those who err are those who repent, whom Allah loves. Avoiding major sins expiates evil deeds, but for minor sins to be forgiven, one must not persist in them. Persisting in minor sins transforms them into major sins; there is no minor sin with persistence, nor a major sin with seeking forgiveness. Acceptable seeking of forgiveness is that which is with the heart and tongue, accompanied by remorse, abandonment of the sin, and a firm resolve not to return to it, and not merely a verbal utterance while persisting in the sin. Repeating a sin with repentance each time is acceptable, and sincere repentance erases sins no matter how often they are repeated.
