What is the ruling on reading illustrated stories that contain disbelieving beliefs, such as transmigration of souls and magic (other than the magic of devils and jinn), and the adoption of gods besides Allah, even though they contain moral values? Is there a consensus on their prohibition or a difference of opinion? And what is the ruling on deeming them permissible?

We issue a fatwa prohibiting the reading of novels that contain disbelieving tenets, fearing that the reader might be influenced by them. However, believing in the permissibility of reading such novels is not disbelief (kufr), because their prohibition is not a matter of scholarly consensus. Declaring someone a disbeliever for deeming sins permissible (istikhlal al-ma'asi) applies when the forbidden act is unanimously agreed upon as prohibited by a definitive consensus, and its ruling is well-known among Muslims, such as fornication and usury, and provided there is no doubt (shubha).
