Shubha
Shubha names a matter whose ruling is not yet clear, sitting between what is plainly permitted and forbidden.
What it means for me: Shubha describes what you do not yet know, not a hidden third ruling alongside halal and haram. The way through it is asking someone qualified, not guessing in either direction.
Example: Someone hears mixed reports about where a supplier's stock actually comes from. The situation is shubha, unclear rather than known to be forbidden, so the right move is to ask, not assume.
Do not confuse with: Haram, the forbidden. Haram rests on evidence already established. Shubha is what has not yet been checked, as described in the hadith on clear and doubtful matters (Sahih al-Bukhari 52).
If scholars differ: Scholars agree that avoiding doubtful matters reflects sound caution, *wara'*. They differ on classifying a specific case as doubtful, since evidence that settles it for one scholar may not have reached another.
