What is the ruling on execution by hanging, and what are the evidences for its impermissibility?

The execution of a person is either as a retribution (qisas), in which case the perpetrator is killed in the same manner as he killed, except in certain cases like sodomy and sorcery, where execution is by drowning, strangulation, or burying alive. Or, the execution is an enforcement of one of Allah's prescribed punishments (hudud), such as for an apostate (murtad), a highway robber (muharib), or one who abandons prayer, in which case he is killed by the sword, and it was also said by a bullet to hasten death. As for the married adulterer (zani al-muhsan), he is killed by stoning.
