What is the ruling on not waking up for Fajr prayer due to taking a sleeping medicine, and will one be held accountable for that?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Prayer is the greatest pillar of religion after the two testimonies, and Allah has warned against neglecting it. It is the greatest cure for psychological illness through persistent observance and abstaining from forbidden acts, for whoever does good deeds will live a good life. If a person exerts the lawful and natural means along with reliance upon Allah, he will be cured by His permission. Delaying prayer from its prescribed time increases the patient's distress and illness. One must observe prayers at their appointed times. If it is possible to take medicine without it conflicting with prayer times, then this is what is obligatory. If sleep overcomes one after making an effort, Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, and there is no negligence in sleep; rather, negligence is in wakefulness by delaying prayer until the time of another prayer enters.
