Is there a Hadith or a Quranic text indicating the avoidance of intoxicants forty days before the month of Ramadan?
Muslims are commanded to abstain from intoxicants absolutely, not just for forty days before . Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." (Quran 5:90). The one who drinks intoxicants must repent to Allah, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, threatened the one who drinks intoxicants that Allah would make him drink from "Teenat al-Khabal" (the sweat of the people of Hell or the pus of the people of Hell), and he informed that his prayer would not be accepted for forty days.
