What is the ruling on a wife shunning her family who shun and harm her?

The rights of parents are great, and being dutiful to them is obligatory. It is not permissible for a wife to sever ties with her parents, no matter how badly they treat her. As for brothers who beat their sister under the pretext of inheritance, they are unjust aggressors. If the parents are content with that, then they too are unjust. The wife has the right to refer their case to the authorities to deter them. She must continue to honor her parents in a way that does not harm her. If the brothers do not cease their injustice, she may visit her parents at times when the brothers are not present, while gently advising her parents to instruct their sons to treat their sister kindly.
