What is meant by the Hadith that mentions the existence of an evil omen in women and horses, and does this mean that evil generally exists in them?

The prohibition of pessimism (tatayyur - augury) is established in the Sunnah (definition), and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, informed that it is polytheism (shirk (definition)). However, ill omens may be found in a woman, a house, and a horse. Scholars have differed in understanding these hadiths, but the correct view is that all augury is blameworthy, and that ill omens in these three affect whoever exhibits pessimism towards them. For Allah may make a servant's pessimism a cause for misfortune to befall him. And the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, mention of ill omens in these three does not affirm the augury that he negated. Rather, Allah may create from them entities that bring ill fortune to those who approach them, and entities that bring blessings. And the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, command for the inhabitants of a house to move is not from the prohibited augury, but rather to leave a place they found burdensome so as not to fall into polytheism and blameworthy pessimism.
