The duration for wiping over leather socks (khuffayn) or regular socks (jawrabayn) begins from the first time the person performing ablution (wudu') wipes over them after an event that necessitates wudu' (hadath), not from the first time the socks are worn. The manner of wiping is to place the wetted fingers of the hands on the toes and then slide them towards the shin. Only the top part of the sock is wiped, and the wiping is not repeated. The right hand should wipe the right foot, and the left hand should wipe the left foot simultaneously if possible. The sides or back of the sock should not be wiped, because wiping is an act of worship, not for cleaning.
