What are the conditions for the Friday Imam?
The conditions for the Imam of the Friday prayer are the same as those for the Imam of any prayer: Islam, sanity, masculinity, and justice (for those who prohibit praying behind a transgressor). Puberty is also a condition (for those who prohibit a discerning child from leading the prayer). Whoever's prayer is valid for himself, it is valid for others.
Some scholars stipulated additional conditions for the Imam of the Friday prayer. Among these are the Hanbalis, who stipulate that the Imam must be someone for whom the Friday prayer is obligatory. Thus, they do not consider it valid behind a slave or a traveler.
However, many Hanbalis have affirmed that it is not a condition for the Imam to be someone for whom the Friday prayer is obligatory.
Many Hanafis stipulate that the Imam of the Friday prayer must be the ruler or someone deputized by the ruler. The correct view, according to the majority of scholars, is that the ruler's permission is not a condition for it.
