Is it permissible to ride an elevator with a non-mahram man (just the two of you), and does the ruling differ between an open and a closed elevator?

Allah the Almighty has forbidden a man to be alone with a non-mahram woman, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "No man is alone with a woman but the third of them is Satan," and his saying: "No man is alone with a woman unless there is a mahram with her." Scholars have unanimously agreed on the prohibition of khalwa, which means a man and a woman being alone in a place where no one else is with them. Based on this, it is not permissible for a woman to ride an elevator alone with a non-mahram man, whether the elevator is open or closed. It is permissible to ride if there is another woman or more with her, as the condition of khalwa is then absent. If there are men and women with her, there is no harm if the elevator is spacious enough that she is not forced to touch or rub against them.
