What is the reason for using "then" instead of "and" in His (the Almighty's) saying: "Then We gave Moses the Scripture" (Al-An'am-154), and does that mean there was another Moses? And why was it said: "So We sent down on those who wronged" in Al-Baqarah-59 and not "So We sent down upon them a torment" as in Al-A'raf-162?

Musa mentioned in Surat Al-An'am is Musa ibn 'Imran. The word "thumma" (then) in the verse is for conjoining one piece of news to another, not to indicate that Musa's time came after Muhammad's, peace be upon them both. Ibn Kathir said: "'Thumma' here is for conjoining news after news, not for chronological order." Al-Baghawi said: "'Thumma' was included to defer the news, not to defer the revelation."

In Surat Al-Baqarah, the statement of the Almighty: "upon those who wronged themselves" came to clarify that the torment did not afflict all of the Children of Israel, but only those among them who were wrongdoers. Ibn Ashour said: The apparent noun was used in place of the pronoun so that it would not be imagined that the torment afflicted all of the Children of Israel.
