Is it permissible to conceal the performance of the obligatory Hajj due to fear of envy or ostentation, or must it be made manifest to encourage others?

Concealing a deed helps achieve sincerity and keeps one away from showing off (riya') and envy. However, its public display may be praised if there is an overriding benefit, such as when the person is someone whose good deeds are emulated. If the deed is free from imperfections, its public display does not harm anyone, and it encourages people to follow suit and emulate it, then public display is better. This is because it is the station of prophets and their heirs, and its benefit extends to others. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever introduces a good practice will have its reward and the reward of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection." However, if any of these conditions are not met, then concealing it is better. So, whoever fears showing off in publicly displaying their Hajj should conceal it. But if they do not fear that, then publicly displaying it is better for them.
