Will the first husband have three new divorces, or two, after his divorcee married another man, then was divorced by him, and returned to her first husband?

If a man divorces his wife with one or two pronouncements, and then her waiting period (iddah) expires, and she marries another man and then he divorces her, and then the first man marries her again, he does not possess more than the remaining pronouncements of divorce he had left. If he had divorced her once, he would have two pronouncements remaining. If he had divorced her twice, he would have one remaining. However, if he divorced her three times, and then she married another man, and then he separated from her, and then the first man married her again, she returns to him with three new pronouncements of divorce, by the consensus of scholars. This view has been attributed to a number of prominent Companions and the majority of jurists.
