Does eating seven dates daily protect against poison and magic only, or all diseases?

2 min readAlso available in العربية

It is established in the Hadith that seven dates of the ‘ajwa variety from Medina, or from the dates of Medina, eaten every morning, will protect the eater from poison and magic. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever eats seven ‘ajwa dates every morning will not be harmed by poison or magic on that day." Muslim narrated: "Whoever eats seven dates from between its two lava fields when he wakes up will not be harmed by poison until evening."

Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned the treatment of poison and other ailments with dates. He narrated that ‘A’isha would prescribe seven ‘ajwa dates on an empty stomach to treat dizziness. ‘A’isha also narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, in the ‘ajwa of Al-‘Aliya there is healing – or it is an antidote – at the beginning of the day."

Ibn Al-Qayyim mentioned the treatment of heart complaints with dates, as Abu Dawud narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, advised Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas when he complained of his heart, to have Al-Harith ibn Kaladah bring him seven ‘ajwa dates from Medina, mash them with their pits, and then administer them to him.

There is a difference of opinion as to whether the treatment with dates is exclusive to the people of Medina, or to the dates of Medina. Some believe that this Hadith was intended for the people of Medina and those near them, and that places can have an effect on the properties of plants. Al-Qahtani believes that it is most complete if the dates are from between the two lava fields of Medina. Sheikh Ibn Baz believes that all dates of Medina possess this quality, and that this is hoped for even for those who eat seven dates that are not from Medina.
